CARBON Pixel

CARBON Pixel is a snippet of code that is placed on a website, to aggregate its visitors and their subsequent visits for the purposes of analyzing and enriching user data.

Requirements

To implement a pixel of this type, you will need:

  • Access to your website’s code base
  • Your Pixel’s base code
  • Access to “CARBON Dashboard"

Note: Depending on your region of business operation , you may have to comply with General Data Protection Regulation.

Implementation

CARBON Pixel is a snippet of JavaScript code that loads a small library of functions, enabling you to aggregate visitors to your website. It relies on cookies, IP addresses and fingerprint techniques to assimilate information regarding visits.

By default, the Pixel will record URLs visited, domains visited, and the devices your visitors use. You can use the Pixel's optional attributes (key, value) to send additional information to the CARBON platform.

Base Code

You will need your Pixel’s base code to install it on your website. The Pixel’s base code is available on your CARBON Dashboard under Pixel Manager. If you have not created a Pixel, follow these instructions to create one (step 1).

The Base Pixel will look like this:

Example
  1. <script src="https://pixel.zprk.io/v4/1/2/abcdef.js?"></script>

This code downloads a library of functions which enables you to aggregate visitors to your website. It is recommended to leave this function call intact.

Installing the Pixel

To install the Pixel, we highly recommend to place the base code between the opening and the closing ‘body’ (<body></body>) tags of every page where you will be monitoring website visitor’s actions. Most developers add it to their website's persistent header, so it can be used on all pages.

Placing the code within the <body> tags reduces the ability of the browser’s or third-party’s code blocking the Pixel's execution. It also executes the code faster, increasing the chance that your visitors are aggregated before they leave your page.

Once you have added this to your website, load a page that has the Pixel. This will begin the tracking activity of the visitors, and you can see the details on your CARBON Dashboard. An indicator (green) will be placed against the Pixel, reflecting correct installation of CARBON Pixel and that we’re receiving the data.

In the absence of the indicator (green),it is recommended that you wait for a few minutes and refresh the page. If your Pixel is still not working, use the CARBON Pixel Helper to track down the problem.

Mobile Websites

In case the mobile version of your website is different from your desktop version, we recommend that you add the pixel to both. This will allow you to aggregate activities of your mobile visitors, and enrich data required for research or engagement use-cases.

Pixel Helper

CARBON Pixel Helper helps you verify that your pixel is working correctly, and provides instructions on avoiding errors (for example, formatting errors) to glean the most out of your Pixel.

Next Steps

Once you have verified that the Pixel has been installed correctly and is aggregating your website’s visitors, use the CARBON Dashboard to categorize and enrich visitors data by creating collections.
